What can I see a private GP about?
You don't need to know exactly what is wrong before you make an appointment.
A private GP consultation can be useful for a wide range of health concerns, whether you have recently developed symptoms or have been dealing with something for a while.
You may wish to book an appointment to:
- Discuss a new or worrying symptom
- Get advice about an ongoing health problem
- Review an existing diagnosis or treatment
- Discuss medication or side effects
- Seek a second opinion
- Investigate symptoms that haven't been fully explained
- Discuss blood tests or other investigations
- Talk through whether you need to see a specialist
- Discuss a sensitive or personal health concern
- Get advice about your general health and what to do next
If you're unsure whether a private GP appointment is right for you, please contact us and we'll be happy to help.
During your appointment
What happens during your appointment?
Your appointment starts with a conversation.
A conversation first
Your GP will take the time to understand what has brought you to the clinic, ask about your symptoms and medical history, and listen to any concerns or questions you may have.
Assessment where appropriate
Where appropriate, your consultation may include a physical examination or other clinical assessment.
Time to talk it through
You'll then have time to discuss what your symptoms may mean, whether further investigation is needed and what treatment or management options are available.
A clear plan for what happens next
We want you to leave the appointment with a clear understanding of what happens next. This may include reassurance and no further action, treatment or medication, blood tests or other investigations, or a referral to a consultant or specialist where appropriate.
You don't need to know what you need before you arrive
It can be difficult to know whether you need a blood test, a referral or a particular investigation when you don't yet know what's causing your symptoms.
You don't need to work this out yourself.
Our Church Street Clinic GP will assess your concerns and talk you through the options. If further tests or specialist advice would be appropriate, we can discuss this with you and help arrange the next steps.

When might an extended appointment be helpful?
Some concerns simply need more time.
An extended appointment can be particularly helpful if you have several things you'd like to discuss, a longstanding or complicated health concern, or a number of symptoms that you'd like to explore together.
It can also be useful if you would like a more detailed review of your health or want to spend more time understanding a diagnosis or treatment plan.
If you're not sure how much time you need, just ask us when booking.
After your appointment
What happens after your appointment?
Before you leave, your GP will discuss the next steps with you. Depending on your individual circumstances, this could include the following.
Treatment
Advice, treatment or a private prescription where clinically appropriate.
Further investigations
Blood tests or other investigations may be recommended to help understand your symptoms.
Specialist referral
If specialist assessment would be appropriate, your GP can discuss referral options with you.
Follow-up
Where appropriate, we can arrange a further appointment to review your symptoms, results or treatment.
